The Big Dam

The Mount Morgan "Big Dam"

The Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited built seven dams on the Dee River. The last and largest dam, officially known as the No. 7 Dam, was built about a mile upstream from the mine in 1900. The dam is known locally as the "Big Dam".

Used as the town's water supply the Big Dam is a swimming and barbequing spot, a welcoming oasis very popular with locals and visitors alike. Locals say that The Big Dam is also home to a small number of Johnston River Freshwater Crocodile's. Sightings are numerous but never confirmed!

Due to a serious drought at the time the dam was not filled until May 1904. In 1999 an extension which raised the existing No.7 Dam wall by 4.5 metres was built. The Dam is a beautiful sight when the rains come and the spillway floods, with people and media coming from miles around to enjoy the spectacle.
