A trip to Central Queensland would not be complete without a visit to the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. It houses a comprehensive collection of items that were used in many aspects of Australian life.
The collection includes grinding stones, axe heads, spears (including a marvellous fishing spear), clubs and some photographs of the indigenous people that the early settlers encountered.
It will come as quite a shock to young members of the present generation who are used to the convenience of modern appliances to see the early mechanical devices used to wash clothes, including the common wash tub. The hand-turned mangle and stove-heated flat irons will also be of interest.
Two wood-burning stoves will remind many of the wood gathering and cutting chores of a bygone era. Among the other items to be seen are hanging food safes, a lovely old wash-basin, hip bath, treadle sewing machine and an ice chest.
The museum houses a fine collection of horse-drawn buggies, wagons and carts as well as a lovely old sulky. Also featured is a small billy-goat sulky, along with saddle and harness equipment, branding irons and yokes. The first motor hearse in Mount Morgan, a 1921 Buick, is on view as is one of Mount Morgan's earliest fire engines.
